Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need an allergy alert test(AAT)?
Reactions to hair colour can be serious and even life threatening. There are strict guidelines from manufacturers, insurers, industry bodies and the MHRA around using hair colour. We endeavour to give you peace of mind so that you can safely enjoy your visits to the salon.
How long does an AAT take and how much does it cost?
You will need an AAT appointment at least 48 hours before your colour appointment. It only takes 10 minutes in the salon and is a free test.
Why do I have to wait at least 48 hours before I can colour my hair?
It takes up to 48 hours for your body to produce an immune system response. If you colour your hair before that time you risk missing a skin reaction.
I want to lighten my hair (bleach), do I need an Allergy Alert Test?
No, an AAT is not required for Wella bleaching products including Blondor (unless otherwise specified on the instructions). However most lightening services including toning afterwards, which you may need an AAT for.
Why don't you test me every time?
We use screening to monitor the need for testing you before your service. If nothing has changed since your last test and we have a valid record (typically within the last 6 months) it will be OK to proceed with your service.
I have been colouring my hair for years, why do I need a test?
One of the triggers for sensitivity and reactions to hair colour is exposure over time, therefore it is important we keep monitoring for your safety.

SKIN TESTING AND SCREENING FOR SENSITIVITY AND REACTIONS
We use testing and screening to check suitability for the colouring products we provide.
AAT (Allergy Alert Test)
For your first AAT with me or if it is 6 months since your last AAT, you have coloured your hair at home (does not include colour fresh), wanting a colour change or have tested positive for Covid-19; Make an appointment to attend the salon at least 48 hours before your appointment. I will apply a small amount of your colour formula to the inside of your elbow. Leave uncovered for 45 minutes then rinse the area with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel. After 48 hours, should you experience any signs of irritation, reddening, swelling, inflammation or itching please contact me. If you develop symptoms that make you unwell please contact a medical professional. When you attend the salon I will observe the test site and ask you to complete a questionnaire. Subsequent colour services may not require an AAT test subject to screening questions. I can advise about what is best for you during your consultation.
I have been trained by Wella to test and screen for suitability for colour services. I invest in my continued education to provide the most up to date practice. Your safety and my work is so valuable to me. When you visit the salon you can have peace of mind that I am taking the best care of you and your hair.
If you are currently shielding or had any changes to your health or medication since your last appointment we can also schedule a virtual consultation to answer any questions you may have.
If you have had your hair coloured with me in the last 6 months, have answered no to all the screening questions and are happy with your previous colour choice, you do not need to have an allergy alert test.
